Abstract
This study was conducted to identify relationship of control grade, stereoacuity and surgical success in basic intermittent exotropia. This retrospective study comprised forty four basic intermittent exotropia patients that underwent strabismus surgery and completed at least six months of follow-up. Forty four patients were divided into three subgroups according to their control grade; group 1 (good control group), group 2 (fair control group), group 3 (poor control group). Evaluation was done in order to identify relationship between near and distance stereoacuity and control grade, and relationship between surgical success and control grade. Surgical success is defined as the ocular alignment within 10 prism diopters in primary position at the final visit. Group 1 was consisted of 12 patients, group 2 was 18 patients, group 3 was 14 patients. Mean near stereoacuity measured by Titmus test was 57.50 seconds of arc (seconds) in group 1, 77.77 seconds in group 2, 131.43 seconds in group 3. Mean distance steroacuity measured by Mentor B-VAT® II-SG video acuity tester was 108.33 seconds in group 1, 148.33 seconds in group 2, 262.82 seconds in group 3. Ten patients (83.33%) in group 1, 13 (72.22%) in group 2, and 10 (71.43%) in group 3 obtained surgical success. In basic intermittent exotropia, the better control grade accompanied with the better stereoacuity significantly. Although the better control grade accompanied with higher surgical success rate, there was no statistically significance.
