Abstract
Serum level of SCC antigen were determined in the serum of 148 patients with untreated squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix and 52 patients with follow up observation after primary treatment. In 36 healthy control, serum SCC antigen level of 2.3ng/ml was determined as cut-off level. 36.2% in stage I, 57.7% in stage II, 95.2% stage III and 100% in stage IV. The mean SCC antigen level was increased stepwise by clinical stage. We compared SCC antigen levels in patients, who underwent radical hysterectomy with bilateral pelvic node dissection, with or without metastasis. Patients with lvmphnode metastasis had a significantly higher pretreatment mean SCC antigen level than those without metastasis. (p<0.05) And positive value were 87.5% and 23.1% respectively. During follow up period, patients with recurrence showed 66.7% positive compared to 4.0% positive in without recurrence. Significant difference was found in SCC antigen level in patients with recurrence compared to without recurrence. (p<0.05) It was concluded that the SCC antigen assay is useful aid to evaluate the extent of disease or predict lymphnode metastasis and detect recurrence during follow up after primary treatment.
