Paraganglioma is a rare tumor thought to arise from the neuroectodermally – derived paraganglionic cells which are dispersed widely along the autonomic ganglia. Most often they are benign tumors. However, infrequently they have been reported to mestastasize. They can metastasize to bones, lymph nodes, and lungs and occasionally they present with spinal compression.
Spine involvement is much less common and usually takes the form of intradural compression of the cauda equina. Epidural compression of the spinal cord by a paraganglioma occurs rarely. Particularly, thoracic paravertebral paraganglioma producing spinal cord compression are much less lesions.
The authors report one case of paraganglioma to the thoracic spine.
