- Abstract
- A case of brain damage in the surviving monozygotic twin after intrauterine death of co-twin is reported. The infant showed extensive encephalomalatic change at birth due to anencephalic intrauterine death of co-twin between 32nd and 34th week of gestation. The etiology is thought to be placental transfer of embolism or thromboplastic material through the vascular shunts. The common circulation between the dead and live twin may produce cerebral, renal, and cutaneous lesions in the live fetus, with little discernible diseases in mother. Careful obstertric and pediatric managements are required in following-up with monozygotic twin pregnancy. A brief review of related literature is presented.
