- Abstract
- Retrospective studies using
multivariate analysis of clinical and pathological features in gastric cancer have identified a number of independent prognostic factors
howerer
the prognostic significance of tumor size remains unclear. The aim of this study was to determine the significance of tumor size as prognostic factor
by reviewing gastric cancer cases treated with curative resection at Dongsan Hospital. Between January 1996 and December 2001
1
132 patients who underwent gastric resection for gastric cancer were reviewed. The sizes of tumors were the measurement made by fresh resected specimens. The patients were divided into two groups: 871 patients with tumors of less than 5 cm in diameter
and 261 patients with tumors of more than 5 cm in diameter. In these two groups
there were statistical differences in macroscopic type
vascular invasion
nerve invasion
survival rate
relapse free survival rate and the level of tumor markers. The 5-year survival rate and 5-year relapse free survival rate in the groups with tumors of less and more than 5 cm diameter
were 90.2% and 85.1%
and 72.7% and 62.5%
respectively. Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that tumor size was an independent prognostic factor to predict total survival and relapse free survival in curatively resected gastric cancer.
