- Abstract
- In order to determine the epidemiological pattern of the liver fluke, the infection rates and intensity of the metacerca rial larvae of Clonorchis. sinensis in fish hosts, and the prevalence of the liver fluke among the residents in the vicinity of Hapcheon Dam, Gyungnam Province, Korea were studied from March to September, 2001. Twelve species of fresh-water fishes caught in the Dam were examined for the encysted larvae of C. sinensis. Of these, two species were infected with the metacercariae of C. sinensis. Infection rates were relatively low and ranged from 10.0% in P. herzi to 7.1% in S. chankaensis. As for the intensity of Clonorchis infection, the average number of cysts varied from 2.5 in P. herzi to 0.1 in S. chankaensis. The prevalence of C. sinensis among the residents in the vicinity of the Hapcheon Dam was relatively high, being found to be 10.1% with an infection rate of 10.7% in males and 9.3% in females: the difference of infection rate between males and females is not found to be statistically significant (t<2). As for the age-specificity, the rate was 0.9% in the 10-14 years age group and 19.5% in the 35-39 years age group: the rate increased as age increased, reaching a maximum of 33.3% in the 50-54 years age group : followed by a decrease. Regarding the intensity of Clonorchis infections, approximately 65.0% of the residents with clonorchiasis had less than 1,000 eggs per gram of feces. These figures indicate that most residents with clonorchiasis are lightly infected. In Summary, this study shows that endemic foci of C. sinensis exist in the vicinity of the Hapcheon Dam, and clonorchiasis are still highly prevalent among the residents.
