- Abstract
- Purpose: The purpose of this study was to review literature related to the effectiveness of staff education programs to reduce BPSD in long-term care facilities. Methods: Electronic database (Pubmed, CINAHL, Riss, Kiss, DBpia, Google scholar) was used for searching key words including dementia , alzheimer disease , aggression , ‘agitation’, behavioral psychological symptoms of dementia , ‘staff’, ‘education’ and ‘program’. A total of 19 studies were included for the analysis based on the inclusion criteria. Results: The most common research design was the cluster randomized controlled trial and types of education programs were ‘lecture’, ‘supervision’ and ‘feedback.’ Training programs provided for more than 8 weeks and 11 hours were significantly effective for BPSD. For the contents of educational programs, the concept of dementia and BPSD, factors, general strategies and skills to manage BPSD, non-pharmacological interventions, communication skills and changing the patients’ environment were included. The significant effects were shown on BPSD and staff’s management behaviors in the program. Conclusion: Based on the results of the review studies, future studies related to provision of education program consisting of the concept, factors, skills and management of dementia and BPSD are recommended.
