- Abstract
- DURING TRANSPLANTATION the kidney suffers an
ischemia/reperfusion injury.¹,²
Reactive oxygen spe-
cies generated by xanthine oxidase during reperfusion of
the ischemic kidney may be in par responsible for the renal
injury.¹,²
Oxygen free radicals are removed by antioxidant
enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, and
glutathione peroxidase.³
Using glutaraldehyde we sought to
cross-link hemoglobin containing SOD and catalase to
protect the kidney from an ischemia/reperfusion injury
during transplantation.
