- Abstract
- Objectives : To compare the symptomatology of panic attacks in panic patients with and without agora-phobia.
Methods : The frequency and severity of panic attacks and the results of factor analysis were compared in patients with the DSM-IV panic disorder with agoraphobia(PDA=40) and without agoraphobia(PD=24).
Results : PDA endorsed 'numbness or tingling sensations' significantly more frequently and had significantly higher 'palpitations', 'derealization/depersonalization', and 'numbness or tingling sensations' in severity than PD. Among physiological symptoms, respiratory symptoms and psychological symptoms on factor analysis, the severity of only physiological symptoms in PDA was significantly higher than PD. PDA had significantly higher severity of both somatic and cognitive symptoms of panic described in DSM-IV than PD.
Conclusion : These findings suggest that the frequency and severity of some physiological symptoms of panic attacks may contribute the development of agoraphobia in panic patients.
