- Abstract
- Objectives:The purpose of this study is to investigate an emotional recognition in the schizophrenic patients using point-light walkers test. Also, we aimed to examine the relationships of point-light walkers test with facial emotion recognition test, other neurocognitive function tests and clinical variables within schizophrenic patients.
Methods:Forty patients with schizophrenia in Bugok national hospital and forty-one healthy volunteers were enrolled in this study. To all participants of the study, point-light walkers movies test, facial emotion recognition test and Wisconsin card sorting tests(WCST) were administrated.
Results:Compared to the healthy control group, the schizophrenic group performed lower in both point-light walker movies test and facial emotion recognition test. Schizophrenic group also performed poorly on WCST relative to control group. Furthermore, there was a significant correlation between point-light walker movies test and facial emotion recognition test within schizophrenic group. The performances on point-light walker movies test correlated with those of WCST within the schizophrenic group. However, there was no significant relationships between point-light walker movies test and positive and negative symptom scale(PANSS) score within the schizophrenic group.
Conclusion:The results of this study showed the emotional recognition deficits in schizophrenic patients. The schizophrenic patients showed impaired emotional processing in not only facial stimuli but also whole-body biological movement. Deficits in emotional recognition in patients with schizophrenia may lead to a major difficulties in adaption to social and occupational situations.
