- Abstract
- Objectives:Patients with schizophrenia have impairment in social cognition and function. This study aimed to compare
social decision-making between healthy controls and patients with schizophrenia using ultimatum game(UG) and
dictator game(DG). In addition, the purpose of this study was to identify the effect of facial expression on social decision-
making.
Methods:Forty patients with schizophrenia and forty healthy controls were enrolled and they played three sets of
games. In one set of the game, they played the role of a responder in UG, whereas in the other sets of games, they played
the role of a proposer in UG and DG. All of the participants played against computerized partners with facial expressions
displaying a happy, neutral, or angry status. Acceptance rate as a responder in the UG and the amount of money
offered as a proposer in UG and the DG were estimated.
Results:As responders, patients showed higher acceptance rates of unfair offers than controls in UG. The proposer’s
facial expression significantly influenced the acceptance rate in the control group. However, patients were not affected
by the facial expression. As a proposer, participants proposed a lower offer in DG than in UG, but it did not have statistical
significance in patients.
Conclusion:The results of this study suggest that the patients with schizophrenia do not tend to experience negative
emotions provoked by unfairness and that they are deficient in social bargaining strategies.
