- Abstract
- This study was designed to identify the relationship between perceived family support and self-care agency in adults with diabetes.
The subjects for this study were the 183 adults with diabetes that received hospital treatment or attended as outpatients in 2 general hospitals at Chon-Ju City in Chonbuk. The data were collected during the period from August 28 to October 7, 1995 by means of an interview and a mail service utilized a structured questionnaire.
Perceived family support was measured by the family support questionnaire that Park Oh-Jang(1984) developed for her study about the effect of social support on compliance with sick-role behavior in diabetic patient and the author of this study modified her instrument. Self-care agency was measured by the Self-As Carer Inventory that has been developed by Geden & Taylor and translated by So Hyang-Sook and modified by the author of this study.
The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation using the SPSS PC+ program.
The results of this study were as follows:
1. The first hypothesis that the higher perceived family support, the higher self-care agency in adults with diabetes was supported(r=.4723, p=.000).
In addition, perceived family support in adults with diabetes provided predicted 22.30% of self-care agency.
2. The second hypothesis that self-care agency in adults with diabetesis will differ from partial general character was partially supported: educational level(f=3.15, p=.009),occupation(f=2.55, p=.015), as whether a patient received the education about a diabetic mellitus or not (t=-3.42, p=.001), therapeutic methods(f=2.72, p=.014)
In addition, there were significant associations between perceived famly support and age(f=2.97, p=.020), as whether a patient stayed in the hospital or not(t=-2.13, p=035), as whether a patient recieved the education about a diabetic mellitus or not (t=-3.62, p=.000), therapeutic methods(f=4.15, p=.000).
In conclusion, this study revealed that perceived family support in adult with diabetes may be an improtment factor that can improve their self-care agency. Therefore, nurses must establish nursing plan included their family when nurses carry out nursing intervention and education for patient so that a patient is not isolated from his/her family and undergoes diabetic control and treatment in comfort.
