Abstract
With the objective of
medical education is focusing to clinical competence, psychiatric undergraduate education is now employing objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs) using standardized patients (SPs). The core skills and knowledge required in psychiatry and neurology is to collect accurate information in an efficient manner, to developing rapport and responding to patient’s emotion, and to educate the patient about illness and encourage treatment. Interviewing strategies for common emotional and maladaptive reaction is also basic clinical skills, need to be educated.High order skill in difficult situation can be educated. Truth telling (breaking bad news), somatization, personality disorder, alcohol and substanse abuse, smoking cessation, family counseling, persistent anger, depressive patient, noncompliance can be a challenging situations. The success of the objective structured clinical examination depends on due authentic standardized patients, simulating clinical encounters and represents an abstraction from the real clinical situation. Standardized patients can be successfuly used for the teaching of interviewing and physical examination skills, and evaluation of medical students and residents.
