- Abstract
- Physicians and nurses are valuable collaborator of healthcare team in patient care. But, their role and duty
difference can make discrepancy in communication satisfaction. Barrett-Lennard relationship Questionnaire
was evaluated in 112 physicians and 245 nurses in 19 hospitals (15 primary private clinics, 3 community
hospitals, 1 university hospital). Among 5 domains (Regard, Empathic Understanding, Congruence, Unconditionality
of Regard, Willingness to be known), ‘Regard' domain scale was significantly higher
(20.6±12.78 vs. 10.8±15.85) and 'Un-conditionality of Regard' domain scale were lower in physicians
compare to nurses (-7.3±7.93 vs. -1.90±9.07). Relationship scales were higher in primary care clinics
compare to larger hospitals. The scales increase according to age and career years. Nurses thought they are
less respected by physician. Physicians and nurses should be aware their role differences and communication
styles. Their mutual understanding and productive communication is essential to improve patient care
