- Abstract
- Hypertension secondary to renal arterial disease is reported to affect 1 to 10 percent of the hypertensive population and is the most common form of potentially curable hypertension. The ratio of atherosclerotic to fibromuscular etiologies is roughly 2:1. In recent years, advances in surgical revascularization and percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty have led to the successful management of renovascular hypertension in many-patients.
We experienced two cases of intractable hypertension due to left renal arterial stenosis in a 16 year old female and a 49 year old male patient whose blood pressure was difficult to control with antihypertensive medication. Renal arteriogram and plasma renin activity checked during the evaluation suggested that the hypertension was caused by renal arterial stenosis.
Aortorenal bypass with saphenous vein graft was performed in both cases and the postoperative results were excellent.
Herein, we report on these two cases of renovascular hypertension with a brief review of the literature.
