- Abstract
- To compare the growth of male students of a general high school (GHS) and a vocational high school (VHS), anthropometry and interiew were done for 133 out of 138 students of the 3rd grade in a GHS and 258 out of 357 students of the 3rd grade in a VHS in Pohang city. Students selection criteria were to have no serious illness for 3years in high school, to have a complete health record, to have physical measurements in December 1986 and to have provided all the data for family background. Height, weight and chest girth of the students measured in May 1983 (3rd grade in middle school) were obtained from the health records and the physical measurements were done by author in December 1986 (3rd. grade in high school). Somatic type was classified into four types by Rohrer index.
Average height (160/7cm), weight (49.6kg) and chest girth (78.6cm) of VHS students were inferior to those of GHS students (163.4cm, 51.2kg and 79.7cm) in middle school and such differences (2.7cm in height, 1.6kg in weight and 1.1cm in chest girth)were attributed to the lower economic status, more siblings and higher birth order of VHS students than the GHS students. In December 1986, average height (170.6cm), weight (62.2kg) and chest girth (89.1cm) of VHS students were increased on the average by 9.9cm, 12.6kg and 10.8cm, respectively, in high school and for the GHS students height (171.6cm) was increased by 8.2cm, weight (64.3kg) by 13.1 kg and chest girth(89.3cm) by 9.6cm. Distribution of the VHS students by somatic type was changed from 17. 4% lean, 64.7% normal, 14.0% overweight and 3.9% obesity in May 1983 to 12.4% lean, 67.4% normal, 16.7% overweight and 3.5% obesity in December 1986. For the GHS students, however, normal type was decreased from 68.4% to 51.8% while lean, overweight and obesity were increased from 16.5%, 12.1% and 3.0% to 17.3%, 18.1% and 12,8%, respectively, in the same period.
The differences in growth and somatic type distribution between VHS students and GHS students were presumed to be related with differences in life pat tern and diet of the two school students; VHS students live in a dormitory and have well balanced meals regularly while GHS students take 535.2Kcal more per day than recommended dietary allowance, VHS students have physical activity for 13,2 hours and no activity (cla-s-s in a room) for 3,8 hours in a day as compared with 5.9 lio니rs of physical activity and 12.1 hours of inactivity for the GHS students-
