- Abstract
- Since the early days of renal transplantation, urologic comlications have remained a continual source of morbidity, occasionally resulting in graft loss or death. We studied the urologic comlications seen in 300 consecutive renal transplants performed between November 1982 and October 1994 at our institute.
The ureter was inserted into the bladder via modified Politano Leadbetter technique in 88 patients and extravesical ureteroneocystostomy in 212 patients. Over all there were 13 urological complications in 12 patients(4.3%), which included 3 ureteral obstructions, 3 urine leakages from cystostomy site, 1 urine leakage from anterior vesical wall, and 6 vesicoureteral reflux.
Three patients expired and four grafts were lost due to chronic rejection. The remaining 5 patients have stable renal fanction. We conclude that meticulous surgical technique may reduce the number of urologic complications and prompt surgical treatment may help to save the grafts.
