Abstract

A retrospective study was made to evaluate clinical characteristics of 10 patients with ectopic ureter. Nine patients varied in age from one month through 10 years, and one patient was 41 years old. Male and female ratio was 2 to 8. The most common clinical presentation was continuous urinary dribbling with otherwise normal spontaneous voiding in girls. Other presentations included febrile UTI or epididymitis. Upper tract radiological studies demonstrated abnormal findings in all patients: hydronephrosis or nonvisualization in single system or upper segment of duplex system. The ectopic ureteral openings were identified at the vestibule in 3 and at the urethra in 1. Operative methods included heminephrectomy with subtotal ureterectomy in 4, nephrectomy in 2, ureteral reimplantation in 1, ureteropyelostomy in 1 and ureteroureterostomy in 1. In summary, ectopic ureter should be suspected in females with continuous urinary incontinence and in males with recurrent urinary tract infection. Complete radiological evaluation of upper tracts should be performed in these situations. Key word : ectopic ureter
