- Abstract
- Although clinical and experimental findings have demonstrated that fetal soft-tissue wounds heal without scarring, very little is known about the process of fetal bone healing. This study examined fetal membranous bone healing in utero, histologically, without fracture fixation in a fetal rabbit model. Our study group consisted of 50 live fetuses (from 30 New Zealand White rabbit). An incisional fracture of the fetal mandibular body was performed on fetal rabbit at 24 days' gestation (term=31days) In utero. The other side mandibular body (not operated on) was used as a control. The specimens havested 1, 3, 5, 7 and 10 days after fracture. Twenty-five fetuses survived the Procedure and were alive at the time of harvest. Histologically, the incisional fracture sites demonstrated fibrin with little hemorrhage at 1 day. There was no evidence of hematoma formation or inflammatory reaction. At 3 days, there was no fibrin or inflammatory cells with more infiltration of mesenchymal cells in fracture sites. The fracture site demonstrated new bone formation at 5 days. At 7 days, the fracture sites healed woven bone completely filling the fracture gap. The fracture sites demonstrated more mature bone at 10 days. The results of this study demonstrated that the fetal membranous bone healing was rapid and no evidence of hematoma formation or inflammatory reaction.
