- Abstract
- High resolution transrectal sonography was performed in 233 patients for evaluation of the prostate over aperiod of recent 19 months. The authors analized sonographic findings of histologically proven 42 patients withbenign prostatic hyperplasia and 14 with carcinoma retrosepctively for differential diagnosis. Four patients whoshow prostatic mass with osteoblastic bone metastasis, elevated serum acid phosphatase level and lymphadenopathywere included into carcinoma group also. Shape and capsule of the prostate, and location, margin, echotexture, hypoechoic halo around the nodule, calcification, cyt of the nodule were evaluated. Alghough there were someoverlap of sonographic findings, we concluded that asymetrical enlargement of the prostate with capsulardisruption, diffuse mixed or hypoechoic nodule with poorly defined margin and central calcification wee moresuggestive of carcinoma. Intact prostatic capsule, centrally located nodule with clear margin, hypoechoic halo andmarginal calcification were more suggestive of benign prostatic hyperplasia.
