- Abstract
- Acute urinary retention is an uncommon complication in patients with herpes zoster with an incidence of about 3.5%, though acute urinary retention is more common when the sacral nerve is affected by herpes zoster. A 56-year-old woman who presented with a severe left calf pain and allodynia and hyperalgesia around the left buttock area developed acute urinary retention about 10 days after skin eruption. Without any specific treatment except urinary catheterization, she recovered her voiding ability about 2 weeks later spontaneously. Moreover, several intravenous lidocaine infusions provided adequate pain relief.
