- Abstract
- Background : The cytokine interleukin(IL)-6 has turned out to be a multifunctional mediator play-ing an a essential role during immunologic and inflammatory reactions. It is synthesized by mononucle-ar phagocytes, vascular endothelial cells, fibroblasts and other cells in response to IL-1 and, to a lesser extend tumor necrosis factor. IL-6 is involved in acute-phase and immunologic responses to injurious a-gents. Elevated IL-6 serum levels have been demonstrated in patients with burns, septisemia, after administration of endotoxins, and severe psoriasis. Objective : Psoriasis is a multifactorial skin disease whose pathogenesis has not been clarified so far. Although the principal clinical defect of a psoriatic lesion appears to be rapidly proliferating epidermis, interaction of keratinocyte proliferation with inflammatory and immunologic processes is obvious. Methods : We performed the immunohidtochemical studies to reveal immuoreactivity of IL-6 in psoriatic skin from 15 patients and three normal control skin using the Vectastain ABC immunoperoxi-dase stain system. Results : In psoriatic plaques, epidermal cells stained heavily for IL-6 as compared with normal con-trol skin. The staining pattern is primarily cytoplasmic. Basal keratinocytes stained more intensely than other epidermal keratinocyter. Conolusion : IL-6 could contribute to the epidermal hyperplasia seen in psoriatic epithelium.
