- Abstract
- Increasing amounts of ultraviolet (UV) radiation are reaching the earth's surface, causing increased concern about its effects on skin. Chronicalluy sun-damaged skin is characterized by dermal connective tissue changes that lead to the wrinkled, aged apperance of sun-exposed skin. Histopathologic studies of photo-damaged skin have revealed reduced amounts of collagen, increased quantities of glycosaminoglycans, and the massive accumulation of abnormal elastic fibers known as solar elastosis in the upper and mid dermis. These connective tissue changes may arise from dysregulated synthesis of extracelluar matrix, increased fiber degradation with inadequate clearance, or some combination of these understanding of photoaging and the rapid evaluation of some compounds thought to alter the effects of UV radiation, further studies will be needed.
